The weather in Leeds wasn't great for pre wedding photography
When I looked out the window the morning of my beach pre shoots in early April, the wind was 30mph with horizontal rain across the window while I drank my lovely hot coffee in my kitchen. This is not unusual for a Leeds wedding photographer to see but I'm always very keen to get the very best weather for my couples for their pre shoots and The Met Office and Apple Weather both promised lovely sunny skies on the coast in a couple of hours time. On this occasion the weather report was right and as soon as I drove out of Leeds the clouds lifted and the sun came out for a very lovely drive to Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day but with strong winds when I arrived on the coast. Capturing a windy pre-wedding shoot on the beach can result in stunning and romantic photographs just like the ones below. The wind added a natural and dynamic element to the photos which I really love.
A Leeds wedding photographer goes to the beach
On that particular day, I had two lovely couples who had chosen to capture their special moments through pre-wedding photoshoots on the beach. Each couple had their unique story and reasons for wanting to document this precious time in their lives.
The first couple, who are getting married close to the beach brought their brilliant doggo Heidi with them and I captured this award winning photo above from Wedisson of them having fun on the beach with Heidi being a big part of that.
My second couple arrived a little later in the day and I took some lovely photographs of them on the beach with the sun shining and the cliffs in the background, with them walking hand in hand before their family also arrived with the family dog Jasper for a few extra photos on the pier.
Both of these shoots would not have been complete in either couples eyes (or mine!) without a trip to get some fish and chips on the beach!
Here are some of my tips to make the most of a windy pre wedding beach photo shoot:
1. **Flowy Outfits**: Choose flowy outfits that will catch the wind beautifully, such as flowing dresses or skirts just like the beautiful dress that Jordan wore from Zara and Charlotte's gorgeous coat. Both their hair really caught the wind for some dramatic shots.
2. **Natural Poses**: I always encourage natural, candid poses that allow the wind to play with the couple's hair and clothing. Embrace the movement and spontaneity that the wind brings.
3. **Use of Props**: Props like a veil, scarf, or hat that can interact with the wind and add interest to the photos.
4. **Timing**: Planning the shoot for the best weather and light can make a real difference to the photos.
5. **Scenic Backdrops**: Take advantage of the beach setting with its vast expanse of sand, water, cliffs and sky. Incorporate the natural elements into your compositions for a dreamy and ethereal look.
6. **Close-up Shots**: Capture close-up shots of the couple's faces to show their expressions as they interact with each other and the environment.
7. **Editing**: I always enhance the mood of the photos (very slightly) during post-processing by adjusting colours and tones to create a more dramatic or romantic atmosphere but also keeping the photos clean and crisp and not overly edited. By embracing the windy conditions and using them to your advantage, you can create a unique and memorable pre-wedding shoot.
